While many people claim they are “natural born leaders,” leadership skills can be learned. With enough discipline, understanding, and practice, anyone can become an effective leader within their business or organisation.
To help you decide whether leadership training makes sense for you, here are some of the benefits it can have on the trajectory of your career and your ability to succeed in your current or desired role.
To improve your leadership skills, you must first understand your current abilities. What are your strengths, and how you can lean into them to become a more effective leader? What are your weaknesses, and how can you work to fill those gaps and be more well-rounded? Developing this insight will help you prioritise the best strategies for improvement. It will also enable you to identify your preferred personal leadership style and to understand when using other styles would be more beneficial to achieve improved outcomes and enhanced career opportunities.
“Ian's leadership program has made a vast difference to my performance and to my outcomes... I highly recommend Ian to anyone who is in business.” Stav Melides, CEO, Melides Ltd
To be effective, leaders must understand how to set direction, build and sustain high-performance teams, coach colleagues, deliver feedback, and build robust, trusting relationships with diverse stakeholders. They need to know how to influence others, empower employees, handle stressful situations, and sense when to delegate tasks or tackle a project on their own.
Perfecting these skills requires knowledge and hands-on experience. Our leadership training emphasises practical application of well-proven tools to maximise your performance.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Ian in High Performing Teams Programs…an outstanding coach [who] guided us smoothly while we thrived as a team.” Ebru Can Temucin, Executive Director, MSD
The ability to lead confidently in different situations will improve both staff engagement and your own sense of satisfaction. The business benefits of good leadership are well-known and the results will positively impact your career trajectory. Further, you will enjoy your role more.

Meet Bill (name changed)
It wasn’t a new feeling, but it brought little comfort to Bill to remember that. Bill was a highly qualified and successful executive on the way up in a growing professional services firm. He had just been awarded the lead role with a new client for an ambitious, demanding project, and today was ‘Day 1’.
As he prepared to enter the client’s office and meet his new team, the old thoughts arose once more: Can I do this? Am I really good enough? What if it goes all wrong? Will they see through me? And then the dreaded feeling of fear raised its ugly head again: his breathing became rapid; he started sweating and his stomach churned. He had learned to mask it, but it was getting ever harder to conceal his true state.
Stressed and unhappy, Bill turned to Aspire MCL for coaching support. He was relieved to find out that the ‘Impostor Syndrome’ he suffered from is a common malady and that his coach could help him address its root causes. As the coaching sessions progressed Bill grew in confidence and learned not only how to master his fears, but how to see new challenges as great opportunities. He also developed the skills necessary to provide the confident team leadership that he always dreamed of.
The knock-on impacts of this change were huge: with his new mentality and skills learned, Bill was able to lead far more effectively and confidently. Crucially, he learnt how to recognise and help those who were suffering from the same fears he had so recently been prey to himself.
Bill’s professional and personal life was transformed for the better as he began to enjoy his role more and more.
Meet Jill (name changed)
Jill looked across the table at her management team. Her frustration grew. It wasn’t a bad team: They all knew their jobs and even seemed to like each other, well, mostly. Her company was small but had very ambitious growth plans.
Her frustration came from knowing that despite generally positive outcomes, the team was simply not achieving its potential, and it would be impossible to realise her plans if she could not shake the team out of its ‘small family business’ mentality. The agenda for today’s meeting betrayed the fact that actions to implement the new IT system had not been completed on time, again! Jill knew that when the matter was raised the problem would always be with someone else, or that those responsible had been ‘too busy’.
It may have surprised Jill to discover that her frustration was also felt by her team. Failure to get things done and to hold people to account was sapping their morale too. Worse, those who were pressing on were becoming disengaged as they saw others failing to do so.
Jill called in Aspire MCL to help. A blend of team and individual coaching and facilitation soon identified several issues. Psychometrics were used to inform an engagement strategy and mentoring was provided to equip key leaders with the core competencies to lead change. Recruitment and promotion practices were revised, and an organisational health (OH) analysis informed the development of the company’s vision, strategy, values and culture.
Equipped with the framework to guide team development, and with the clarity gleaned from the OH workshops, Jill transformed the company. A new sense of purpose, coupled with growth in key leadership and team working competencies, led to improved financial performance and renewed optimism.
There were still challenges, but Jill could now look to the future with renewed optimism.
Meet Maya (name changed) -
“Will this ever change?” That was the question in Maya’s mind as she looked at the clock. It was 8:02 pm on Friday. She was going to be very late home, again. Maya was ambitious and she generally loved her work as a regional director for an international consultancy firm, but there never seemed to be enough time to get everything done.
Her family had been understanding, but she longed to be able to spend more time with them. Her love of running had been put on the ‘back burner’ for 3 months, but that was 9 months ago!
It wasn’t just the time: the ever-increasing workload was starting to affect her in other ways: she was getting tired, and friends noted she was becoming shorter with them. Recently she had started to think about just walking away from it all – something that was unthinkable to her during the previous 6 years spent with her current company.
Maya’s ‘can do’ attitude had served her well, but the awful realisation that this was not a sustainable approach dawned on her that Friday evening. In desperation, she turned to Aspire MCL for support.
It surprised Maya to find that there were so many things she could do to manage her workload, free up time and reduce stress: Her coach worked with her on setting priorities and planning more efficiently, improving meeting effectiveness, delegating, making better decisions, and much more. An NLP Business Practitioner Coach, he also helped her to develop a more positive but still realistic mindset and explained how to use the brain’s natural ways of working to her advantage. The importance of self-care became a core aspect of her change program.
Six months later, Maya told her coach, “I am still busy, but now I am busy with the right things.” She had stopped micro-managing (much to the delight of her team!), became more proficient in deciding what to do, drop or delegate, and was finding more time to spend outside of work.
Maya’s motivation resurfaced as she regained control of her life, and her family was grateful too!
